Understanding Breast Cancer

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it's important to understand some basics: What is breast cancer and how does it happen?

In this section, you can learn the the facts about cancer, the anatomy of the breast, how breast cancer develops, and what factors can increase risk for getting breast cancer. You also can learn more about signs and symptoms to watch for and how to manage any fears you may have about breast cancer.

Individual Care: Core Commitment
When a diagnosis of cancer is made that patient becomes a patient for life. We will walk with her from the initial stages of surgery, this can be with or without reconstruction, through the stages of treatment including radiation and chemotherapy. We will then continue that journey with her for the rest of her life. As many cancer patients know, even when you are "cured" you still carry that diagnosis with you wherever you go.

For breast care problems that require no surgical intervention
Thorough counseling and follow-up care is given. For example the patient who presents with breast pain, if no abnormalities are found on mammogram or ultrasound, a homeopathic approach is used. The woman is instructed to avoid methylxanthines, primarily caffeine. She is also instructed to take vitamin E and Evening Primrose Oil. A six week follow-up appointment is made to make sure that there is relief from the pain and if not further workup and treatment options would be explored.

Palpable Breast Mass
For a woman who comes in with a palpable breast mass. All studies will be reviewed and needle biopsy done that day if applicable. If excisional biopsy is indicated then that is scheduled within the week. The whole goal is from diagnosis to treatment in two weeks or less. For those patients with an abnormal mammogram and or ultrasound needle core biopsy would be done and other surgeries scheduled as needed. Again the whole goal is to go from diagnosis to treatment in less than two weeks.

Genetic Testing / High Risk Breast Cancer Patients
High risk patients are offered genetic testing, counseling and long term follow-up. This includes annual or biannual doctor's visits, appropriate screening studies (e.g. mammogram, MRI, BSGI, ultrasound) and preventive medication prescriptions for either Evista or Tamoxifen.

Breastfeeding Problems
Breastfeeding problems are also addressed. This includes working closely with a certified lactation consultant and taking care of those women with complications due to breastfeeding.
